Spanish verb dormir: conjugation

The verbs dormir and morir are unusual in that they have two vowel changes:

• in the present tense (both indicative and subjunctive), the stem vowel changes to ue when stressed: this is a common pattern of vowel change in Spanish;
• in the present indicative, the stem vowel remains o when not streseed, giving the forms dormimos and dormís— again, this is not unusual;
• in certain forms where the stem is not stressed, the stem vowel is u; this special vowel change happens whenever the ending does not have a monophthong i vowel, which in practice means:
  • in the nosotros and vosotros forms of the present subjunctive, when the stem is unstressed, giving durmamos, durmáis;
  • in the third person preterite: durmió, durmieron;
  • in the gerund: durmiendo.
